If you note, they say they don't actually speed up downloads or uploads of files. What some of them do is see what site you are on, and start downloading some of the links while you are still on the first page, thus "saving time" if you happen to go to the links they chose. Others cache your pages, and just check for changes, so it seems like you're going faster because everything is still the same.
Basically, there is just so much data you can get on a dial-up service...
